2018 marks the 1,000th anniversary of the founding of the Ohrid Archdiocese (1018) by the Byzantine emperor Basil II.
The major celebration of this event by the Orthodox canonical Church in the Republic of Macedonia took place on September 29-30 in the St. John Chrysostom Monastery in Nizepolje, Bitola.
Several prayer services were served. The Divine Liturgy was presided by His Beatitude Jovan, Archbishop of Ohrid and Metropolitan of Skopje. The concelebrants were Metropolitan Amfilohije of Montenegro-Coastlands, Archbishop Abel of Lublin-Chelm (Polish Orthodox Church), Bishop Isaia of Sumber (Orthodox Church of the Czech Lands and Slovakia), Bishops Pahomije of Vranje, Teodosije of Raska-Prizren, David of Krusevac, Isihije of Mohach, Metodije of Dioclea, Joakim of Polog-Kumanovo and locum tenens of Debar-Kicevo, Marko of Bregalnica and locum tenens of Bitola, David of Stobi and locum tenens of Struma, as well as presbyter Spiridon, representing Archbishop Anastasios of Tirana and All of Albania, and many clergy from several local Orthodox Churches.
A couple of renowned choirs participated. Civil authorities were also present.
The liturgical celebration was followed by a banquet. His Beatitude Jovan, Archbishop of Ohrid and Metropolitan of Skopje gave a homily. There was also a lecture on the history of the archdiocese.
