Biography of Metropolitan John of Chersonese and Western Europe

Metropolitan John (Roschchin) of Chersonese and Western Europe was born on October 22, 1974 in Moscow, into a family of civil servants.

1991: Secondary education at Moscow School #4, advanced English studies.

1991 – 1993: Studies at the Faculty of Law of the Moscow Institute of Human Sciences.

1993 – 1994: Novice at the Pskov-Caves Monastery.

1994 – 1997: Studies at the Moscow Seminary.

1996 – 1997: Worked for the Moscow Patriarchate editorial council, collaborated in the writing of liturgical books.

1997: Started to work at the secretariat for interdenominational connections, in the Moscow Patriarchate Department for External Church Relations (DECR).

1999 – 2000: Studies at Saint Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary in New York.

2000 – 2002: Studies at the School of Philosophy at the Catholic University in Washington.

2003 – 2009: In charge of interfaith relations at the DECR.

August 28, 2007: Ordained as a deacon by Metropolitan Kirill of Smolensk and Kaliningrad, the President of the DECR. Ordained as a priest by him on September 23 of the same year.

October 4, 2012: The Holy Synod decided to appoint him as the Representative of the Russian Federation to the United Nations. He became a member of the clergy of St. Nicholas Cathedral in New York.

March 11, 2014: Archbishop Theognostus of Sergiev-Posad made him a monk with the name of John, in honor of St. John of Shanghai and San Francisco.

July 25, 2014: The Holy Synod appointed him Bishop of Naro-Fominsk, in charge of the parishes of the Moscow Patriarchate in the United States.

July 28, 2014: His Holiness Kirill made him an Archimandrite during a Divine Liturgy celebrated at the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow.

August 1, 2014: Episcopal coronation at St George Church on Poklonnaya Hill, in Moscow. The service was presided by Patriarch Kirill.

October 15, 2018: The Holy Synod appointed him Bishop of Bogorodsk, in charge of the parishes of the Moscow Patriarchate in Italy.

December 28, 2018: The Holy Synod appointed him at the head of the Western Europe Exarchate, with the title “of Chersonese and Western Europe”, as well as the head of the diocese of Chersonese. He temporarily continues to administer the parishes in Italy.

January 3, 2019: Patriarch Kirill elevated him to the dignity of metropolitan at the Kremlin Dormition Cathedral in Moscow, during the Divine Liturgy for the feast of Saint Peter, Metropolitan of Moscow.
