Recent events in Ukraine have been a source of anxiety, not only because of the disunity they cause in the Orthodox world, but also because in this situation, the opinion of local Orthodox Churches has not been taken into consideration.
This was in substance what Patriarch John X of Antioch declared when answering the letter sent by Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople, in which he was announcing is intention to grant autocephaly to “Orthodox Church in Ukraine”.

“We want to see the unity of the Orthodox world strengthened and consolidated. It appears from your letter that you have decided to go on with the process of granting autocephaly…  Therefore, we appeal to you: do not make any decision without the consensus of the autocephalous Orthodox Churches. For it is unreasonable to stop a schism at the price of the Orthodox world unity”, explained the Primate of the Orthodox Church of Antioch.

He expressed the certainty that “what is most useful for peace in the Church, for its unity, and for the common Orthodox witness in our world today, is to suspend and postpone this process, as long as the Ukrainian problem is not thoroughly studied, and as long as a pan-Orthodox solution is not found “.
“We implore your All-Holiness to call your brothers the Primates of the Orthodox Churches to examine these questions in order to protect our Church from dangers that would not bring peace and harmony, neither in Ukraine nor in the Orthodox world,” he continued.
“Our love for our Orthodox Church and for Your Beloved All-Holiness prompts us to write you these words, in the hope of seeing the Orthodox world united, bearing witness to the Truth of our Lord Jesus, incarnated for the salvation of the world,” stressed the primate of the Orthodox Church of Antioch.
