SAINT HILARY OF POITIERS

13 janvier

Saint Hilary, the great opponent of Arianism, was born around 320. He was raised as a pagan, but converted to Christianity as an adult. He became Bishop of Poitiers in 350. When the emperor Constantius II attempted to impose Arianism on the western Church, Saint Hilary led a vigorous opposition to his efforts. Because of his outspoken criticism, he was exiled to Phrygia in 356. There he became such a defender and champion of Orthodoxy that the emperor decided it would be less trouble to allow him to return to his diocese.

Saint Hilary continued to fight against Arianism until his death in 368. His holy relics still rest in the cathedral bearing his name at Poitiers in France.

He has lent his name to the “Hilary term” of English law courts and universities, which begin on or near his Feast Day.

TROPARIA AND KONTAKIA

Troparion of the Theophany, tone 1

When You, O Lord were baptized in the Jordan The worship of the Trinity was made manifest For the voice of the Father bore witness to You And called You His beloved Son. And the Spirit, in the form of a dove, Confirmed the truthfulness of His word. O Christ, our God, You have revealed Yourself And have enlightened the world, glory to You!

Troparion of the saint, tone 4

Guide of Orthodoxy, teacher of piety and holiness, luminary of the world, God-inspired adornment of hierarchs, O wise Hilary, by thy teachings thou hast enlightened all, O harp of the Spirit. Intercede with Christ God that our souls be saved.

Kontakion of the saint, tone 4

Enduring exile for the Faith delivered to the Church of Christ, thou didst withstand the deceit of the Arians, O holy Hierarch Hilary. By thy prayers and thy teachings, O defender of Orthodoxy and right belief, convert the Western lands and entreat Christ for us, who honour thee.

Kontakion  of the Theophany, tone 4

Today You have shown forth to the world, O Lord, and the light of Your countenance has been marked on us. Knowing You, we sing Your praises. You have come and revealed Yourself, O unapproachable Light.

Ephesians 6:10-17 (Saturday after – Epistle)

10

Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.

11

Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

12

For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.

13

Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

14

Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness,

15

and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace;

16

above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.

17

And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;

1

Therefore be imitators of God as dear children.

2

And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma.

3

But fornication and all uncleanness or covetousness, let it not even be named among you, as is fitting for saints;

4

neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks.

5

For this you know, that no fornicator, unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God.

6

Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience.

7

Therefore do not be partakers with them.

8

For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light

Matthew 4:1-11 (Saturday After – Gospel)

1

Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.

2

And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterward He was hungry.

3

Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.”

4

But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’ “

5

Then the devil took Him up into the holy city, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple,

6

and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written: ‘He shall give His angels charge over you,’ and, ‘In their hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone.’ “

7

Jesus said to him, “It is written again, ‘You shall not tempt the LORD your God.’ “

8

Again, the devil took Him up on an exceedingly high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory.

9

And he said to Him, “All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me.”

10

Then Jesus said to him, “Away with you, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the LORD your God, and Him only you shall serve.’ “

11

Then the devil left Him, and behold, angels came and ministered to Him.
