Since 1950, June 1st is dedicated to the protection of children, with activities such as anti-abortion events or fundraising for sick children.
Russian and Romanian Churches also mark the event liturgically, as on June 1st, the Church celebrates the memory of the couple Grand Prince Dimitry Donskoy and Grand Duchess Eudoxia , who had a very large family and were an example of faithfulness. In the Romanian Church, the Sunday following June 1st is also the day dedicated to parents and children. The Romanian Patriarch considers the reality of the family and the religious education of children as essential elements to focus on today in the Church.
“Our duty is to take care of children and protect them, for the Savior Himself says, And whoso shall receive one such little child in My name receiveth Me (Mt. 18:5).”, said His Holiness Patriarch Kirill on that day.
“The family is the crown of creation and the place or environment in which child begins to understand the mystery of God’s parental love for all people,” wrote patriarch Daniel.
