The Unification Council is over, and they elected a new Metropolitan.
However, let’s have a look at circumstances right before this assembly.

Yesterday morning, a SBU (Security Service of Ukraine) agent went to find Metropolitan Agapit (the Metropolitan of Mogilev-Podolsk, Ukrainian canonical Church) who was then in Bukovina, and offered to take him to Kyiv.
As Metropolitan Agapit reported, the SBU agent, who introduced himself as “Dmitry”, told him this was supposedly to discuss with Metropolitan Simeon of Vinnitsa and Bar.
“I then called Metropolitan Simeon on the phone, and he confirmed he wanted to talk to me. So I went to Kyiv with the SBU. But I did not have the opportunity to speak with Metropolitan Simeon”, explained Bishop Agapit.
In fact, a second SBU agent, Dmitry Gorbenko, met with the canonical Church hierarch in the capital. The bishop was taken to a hotel, and was offered to meet with the SBU officials.
However, Metropolitan Agapit managed to get in touch with Member of Ukrainian Parliament Andrii Derkach, who along with MP Vadym Novynskyi,  helped him escape the SBU pressure and took him to the Kyiv Caves Lavra.
“We decided to go to the Kyiv Lavra to meet Metropolitan Onufriy and talk to him about the situation… On the way, I gave an interview and said I will not go to the Unification Council, as our Church’s primate did not give his blessing to do so, and as our Church will not participate,” added the Metropolitan.

Vadym Novynskyi believes “the SBU are carrying out illegal activities, by means of threats, interrogations, and criminal proceedings, in order to force the hierarchs of the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church to participate in the council”.

As Andrii Derkach pointed out, “what happened with Metropolitan Agapit is further confirmation that power is acting through coercion.”  He added that other metropolitans of the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church are in a difficult situation, and that they could similarly be taken to Kyiv, to force them to participate in the council. The MP addressed the SBU agent, asking them to “stop these illegal actions” against the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church and its bishops.
