Some bishops and priests of the new Ukrainian Church are planning to go to Jerusalem on the occasion of the great feast of the Theophany on January 19. The Patriarchate of Jerusalem is under intense pressure, requested to concelebrate with them, according to an internal source of the Jerusalem patriarchate.
So far, the Patriarchate has not accepted to receive clergy nor concelebrate with the representatives of these schismatic groups. But it is hard to say with certainty what will be ultimately decided, because of the pressure put on the Church of Jerusalem by many authorities, including Constantinople, Israel, and the United States.
Let us recall that many Ukrainians go on pilgrimage to the Holy Land, hence the daily issue of the Liturgies by bishops and priests who accompany these groups of pilgrims.
We can estimate that a large majority of the hierarchs of the Jerusalem Patriarchate support the position of the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate) and of the Russian Orthodox Church.
On January 10, the Divine Liturgy was concelebrated by Archbishop Archbishop Aristarchos of Constantina (Jerusalem Patriarchate) at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, and priests from Russia, Romania, and Georgia. A number of Ukrainian clergy were also present, and Archbishop Aristarchos strictly verified their original jurisdiction, as is customary. This was reported by the Union of Orthodox Journalists.
The Holy Synod of the Jerusalem Patriarchate has made no public statement about the Ukrainian crisis since it came back to the surface last April, although statements by its primate Patriarch Theophilos III, show his support for the Ukrainian canonical Church and its primate Metropolitan Onufriy of Kyiv and all Ukraine.
Just before the Ukrainian state appealed to Constantinople in order to obtain autocephaly at the end of last April, Patriarch Theophilos had met with a Ukrainian delegation in the Holy Land, and expressed his conviction that Metropolitan Onufriy was the only person able to deal with the current difficult situation of the Ukrainian people.
“God chose His Beatitude Metropolitan Onufriy of Kyiv and all of Ukraine, the most appropriate person for the current difficult situation of the Ukrainian people, and he will have the strength to overcome the schism that came up in Ukraine”, he had said at the time.
