Bishop Makarios of Christoupolis (Patriarchate of Constantinople) described as inauthentic the text published by the media in his name about the Church in the Ukraine.

The text of the statement, which is considered as a basis for the preparation of Ukrainian autocephaly by Constantinople and has been published by Ukrainian media, is not authentic. According to by its author, Bishop Makarios of Christoupolis.

In an interview with the Greek agency “Orthodoxia.info”, the bishop declared that his presentation on the history of the Church in the Ukraine, delivered during the Synaxis of the Church of Constantinople in Istanbul on September 1, has not yet been published, and that it has nothing to do with the articles published under his name in the media a month ago.

“Unfortunately, on October 2nd, I was surprised to discover the text in English posted on the site Risu.org.ua (…) without my knowledge. It is obvious that this text is not the one I gave,” said Bishop Makarios. He mentioned that he had been obliged to address a protest to the editorial staff of the site in question.

“I immediately sent a letter to this site, expressing my sadness for using my name and publishing a text they did not receive from me. Unfortunately, they did not tell me who sent it to them, and what is behind this attempt. At the same time, I asked them to remove the text, as it is not authentic (my e-mail is available to anyone interested). The webmasters have kindly removed the text and it can no longer be found on their site. They replaced it with another text in English, which does belong to me. It is entitled: “A Different Approach to the Ecclesiastical Discussion about Ukraine”. It had previously been published in Greek with the same title. This text totally expresses my thought and those who published it received it from me”.

The bishop added that his presentation to the Synaxis, as well as other documents on the same theme, will be published in a separate book by the end of November.

As we know, last Monday, Orthodox Encyclopedia, the Church Research Center of the Moscow Patriarchate, had published comments (here in Russian) on that presentation. It became the fundamental source of the historical testimonies used by Constantinople in its decision to interfere in the ecclesiastical affairs of the Ukraine.

According to Russian ecclesiastical historians who studied the published text, the scientific quality of it turns out to be “dismally low”. It raises questions about the “fragile foundation upon which the Patriarchate of Constantinople is striving to build its international ecclesiastical policy”.

The Patriarchate of Moscow considers that the positions expressed in the text are refuted by historical facts and that they are evidence of “the politicized approach of Constantinople”, particularly as regards the evaluation of the events in twentieth-century Russian history.

“In fact, it is not a document produced by experts, but by propagandists. Its reading makes us deeply regret that such important decisions are made by the Patriarchate of Constantinople on the basis of texts with such a dismally low scientific quality, said the Moscow Patriarchate.
