The Holy Synod of the Patriarchate of Constantinople made the historic decision to allow priests to remarry, says the Romfea website. An official text will be written by Patriarch Bartholomew specifying the conditions allowing the priests to marry a second time.
According to the statement, only widowed priests will be allowed to remarry, as well as those who were abandoned by their wives, and this after careful consideration by a commission of the Holy Synod on a case-by-case basis. Priests wishing to contract a second marriage by leaving their wives will in no case be allowed to remarry.
