The Theological School of Halki was founded in 1844 with the permission of the Sultan of the time and was in operation until 1971, when it was closed by the Turkish government.
For almost ten years, there have been rumors of a possible reopening and the building was even renovated. Turkish President Erdogan promised Patriarch Bartholomew that the seminary would reopen.
But on August 2, the Turkish government announced they are planning to open a center for Islamic studies on the island of Halki, across the street from the Orthodox seminary. If this happens, the seminary will probably never reopen.
The locals are discontented, as numerous Muslim students would add to the large number of tourists.
